Featured Information and FAQs
Check this section regularly for information and answers to additional frequently asked questions.
When will I learn who my advisor is?
You will meet your academic advisor at the Transfer Advisor-Advisee lunch on September 17th. At the lunch you will schedule a meeting with your advisor to plan your study list for Autumn Quarter.
When do I register for courses?
You will sign up for courses in Axess after you arrive on campus.
What do I need to know about transferring credits?
You will need at least 180 total units to graduate from Stanford. In addition, you must satisfy requirements in their chosen major. Each department has different major requirements. Units toward your major at another institution are not necessarily transferable toward a Stanford major. Furthermore, transfer credits accepted by the University may not count towards your specific major. To understand more about your department's major requirements and transferring credit:
- Meet with the Student Services Administrator in the department(s) you are considering.
- Review the Registrar's page on transfer credit.
When do I declare a major?
Stanford students are encouraged to declare a major by the end of their sophomore year. Students are required to declare a major by the end of the first quarter of their junior year. Transfer students may take until the end of their junior year to declare, but are encouraged to declare earlier.
How do I fulfill the PWR Requirement?
During the first few weeks of school, all transfer students must meet with Art Palmon in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. This meeting will determine placement in either PWR1 or PWR 2 to fulfill the University's writing and rhetoric requirement. It is important to fulfill the Writing and Rhetoric requirement at your earliest opportunity.
Freshman Dean's Office
Although it only mentions freshmen in its title, the Freshman Dean's Office (FDO) also works with transfer students. The FDO welcomes and integrates transfer students into the Stanford family from acceptance of admission through the end of their first academic year. It does so by addressing students' individual transitional needs, connecting students to resources and opportunities, and cultivating an understanding of Stanford's history and traditions. The FDO sends you Approaching Stanford, plans your New Student Orientation, provides programs during the academic year, and works closely with the office of Undergraduate Advising and Research to help you with questions and issues, both large and small.
