OSPKYOTO 44: The Zen of Japanese Design: Wa Concepts and their Creative Application (3 Units)
Prof. Jun Tomita’s experience spans academia, design and business. He holds a B.Sc. in Studio Art from New York University, and a B.Sc. in Architecture from Tokyo Denki University. He holds a position as a Visiting Professor in the Product Design Department at the Kyoto University of Art and Design, where he lectures and workshops on design innovation by Wa concepts, advanced product design and design marketing. Tomita is Kiln Master of the Imperial Omuro Kiln, a position appointed since 1646 by Ninnaji temple. He is President of Ninshu, a handmade ceramics company, as well as President of Atimont Designs Institute Inc., a design and architecture company based in Tokyo. Tomita is the recipient of several awards, including the Japan Good Design Award (2002) for his “Will Actic” mechanical pencil, and Best of Category ID Magazine USA Annual Design Review (2006) for his Pet Bottle Design. He has taught on the Stanford Program in Kyoto since 2018.
