In 2011, I came to Stanford to start the Leland Scholars Program (LSP). Starting with 33 students in our inaugural year, we have added each subsequent cohort into what is affectionately known as the “LSP Family”. What began as a simple idea of helping students transition into the university environment developed over the years into a comprehensive summer experience, a mentorship network, a strong supportive community, and generations (including hundreds of students) that have been able to gain something valuable as a result. I have become convinced during this time that not only do the individual scholars gain necessary skills, friendships, knowledge, and confidence, but the University gains a group of diverse and talented students who, because of LSP, are more prepared to enrich its dorms, classrooms, and programs with their full and unique selves. That LSP deeply transforms each scholar as well as LSP collectively transforming Stanford’s campus -- this is the vision which was started in 2011 and into which I hope you, too, will join. Whoever you are and wherever you are from, the LSP Family welcomes you to Stanford with open arms.
