What to Expect During the Program

"I have never before been in an environment where faculty and students could interact without hesitation. We engaged in and had mutual passion for art and openly learned from each other. Everyone was included and I gained so much knowledge in such a short period of time." Arts Intensive Student

Arts Intensive is Suspended for 2020

In Arts Intensive courses the residential and experiential art making are the most important mechanisms through which students build community, creative confidence, and connections with faculty. Rather than go online, we have chosen to pause the program for a year. We expect that the program will resume in 2021.

Now in its 11th year the program is a launching pad particularly for first year students to immerse themselves in art practice.  For upper-class students Arts Intensive is a way to focus on their craft with the close mentorship of campus faculty and guest artists to realize dynamic new works in all art forms. Student evaluations of the program often reflect that taking an Arts Intensive sets them off on a path of self-discovery and builds their confidence in their future study and career choices.

  • Classes include: hands-on projects; travel classes; fieldwork or community engaged learning; intensive studio sessions; master workshops; archival research; and Bay Area field trips. You and 10-15 other students live together as a residential community.
  • What classes are offered?  Project-based courses from a range of art media are offered each year.  2021 curriculum is not yet set, the sampling below will introduce you to some of the courses and faculty who have taught in Arts Intensive. Check out our Photo Gallery  to see more about past AI classes.
  • Is there a cost or tuition? The all-inclusive program fee covers tuition, room and board, books, and all class activities and travel. ALL students get a scholarship and AI offers need-based assistance as well, making it totally free for many students.
  • How do I apply? Applications open March 1 each year and are due after spring break. Apply to your top 3 classes.
  • Can I do AI and still get a summer internship? Yes! (but not at the same time) AI happens the last three weeks of summer, after most opportunities have ended and before the school year starts.
