The academic objective of the Hong Kong program is to introduce students to the complex diversity and importance of the Sinophone world. The location will provide students with exposure to courses within the social sciences and China Studies, as well as integration into Hong Kong university life.
There are no prerequisites for the Hong Kong program.
All courses will be held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), in alignment with CUHK’s academic semester calendar. CUHK is known widely for its deep roots in Chinese culture, bilingualism, multiculturalism, and its unique college system. Classes are taught in English, but Mandarin and Cantonese language courses will be available for BOSP students. CUHK also has a notable program in Contemporary China Studies among other rich curricular offerings.
All courses at the BOSP Hong Kong Program grant credit toward Stanford graduation. Students must enroll in a minimum of twelve units from the courses offered through the program - any other courses taken outside the program will be in addition to those twelve units. Please review the list of Hong Kong courses via the course search database.
Please note that all courses except those taught by the Stanford Faculty in Residence are managed directly by CUHK. Some courses have capacity limits and some courses may be offered in conflicting time slots. You are encouraged to maintain as much flexibility as possible in your curricular planning.
Coursework in the Hong Kong program is offered in collaboration with the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). BOSP students select from pre-approved courses at CUHK, all of which will yield Stanford credit and count toward Stanford graduation requirements. Students will also participate in a mandatory survey course, specifically designed for Stanford students in Hong Kong. Individual courses have been approved for credit in the departments of Anthropology, Communication, Feminist, Gender, & Sexuality Studies, Film Studies, History, Human Biology, International Relations, Political Science, Public Policy. For a list of all BOSP courses offered for the next academic year, and for information on which courses earn departmental credit, please refer to the BOSP course database.
