For Applicants: PWR Lecturer FAQ

APPLICATION DEADLINE: For full consideration of an application, all required materials must be uploaded to Interfolio by midnight PST on January 11, 2019.  If you receive a notice from Interfolio stating that the materials will not be sent along to us until after the deadline, do not be alarmed.  The deadline marks the time by which materials must be submitted to Interfolio.

Q.  Do I have to have experience teaching in a humanities discipline to be eligible to apply for these positions?

A.  No. PWR welcomes applications from accomplished and committed teachers from all academic disciplines with strong interests in the teaching of writing, research, oral presentations, and communication more generally.  All PWR lecturers have access to orientation, training, and continued professional development opportunities in the discipline of Writing Studies and rhetoric in all of its aspects.

Q.  What is the timeline for the search? When will you be scheduling interviews?

A. Initial review of applications will begin immediately after the January 11 deadline.  First-round interviews will be conducted via phone or Skype, and we expect to begin these interviews by early February.  Second-round interviews including a campus visit will likely be held beginning in late February.

Q. If I require a visa to work in the United States, can I be offered a lecturer position in PWR?

A. Applicants must have the right to work in the United States in order to receive an offer.

Q. After I applied for the position, I received a job offer from another source. Should I inform you?

A. Yes, please let us know if you plan to accept another position or if you have a deadline for responding to the offer if you continue to have interest in a position with PWR.  We understand that decisions about other offers may need to be made before the PWR search is complete and would appreciate learning about your situation in time to give you full consideration. 

Q.  I applied previously for a PWR lecturer position, and I'd like to apply again this year.  Should I resubmit all my materials?

A.  Yes, please submit a new application including updated recommendations.

Q.  The online form requests the names and positions of three references but also allows for additional references. Do you welcome additional written letters of reference, or would you prefer to receive only three such letters?

A. Three letters are sufficient.  Additional recommendations can be submitted provided that they speak directly to the candidate's qualifications and potential contributions as a teacher and scholar in a program with PWR’s mission.

Q.  I plan to complete, defend, and file my dissertation this academic year but will not receive the official degree until after the search process has been completed.  Am I eligible to apply?

A. Yes.  Please mention these details in your letter and ask at least one of your recommenders to verify the degree progress information.  The degree must be conferred before the start date of the appointment, September 1, 2019.
