Bay Area Arts Immersion

Course Description

Students explore the arts in San Francisco, the East Bay, the North Bay, the Peninsula, and the South Bay with Terry Berlier and Kevin B. Chen. The Bay Area Arts Immersion combines field trips with on-campus workshops.

Terry Berlier

Terry Berlier

Terry Berlier is an interdisciplinary artist who works primarily with sculpture and expanded media. Her work is often kinetic, interactive, and/or sound based and focuses on everyday objects, the environment, ideas of nonplace/place, and queer practice.

She has exhibited in solo and group shows both nationally and internationally, including the Contemporary Jewish Museum of San Francisco, Catherine Clark Gallery, Babel Gallery in Norway, Richard L. Nelson Gallery in Davis CA, Center for Contemporary Art in Sacramento, Kala Art Institute Gallery in Berkeley, San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery, Natural Balance in Girona Spain, and FemArt Mostra D’Art De Dones in Barcelona Spain. Her work has been reviewed in the BBC News Magazine, San Francisco Chronicle and in the book Seeing Gertrude Stein published by University of California Press. Her work is in several collections including the Progressive Corporation in Cleveland Ohio, Kala Art Institute in Berkeley California, and Bildwechsel Archive in Berlin Germany. She has received numerous residencies and grants including the Center for Cultural Innovation, Zellerbach Foundation Berkeley, Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Fellowship, Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research Fellow at Stanford University, Recology San Francisco, Hungarian Multicultural Center in Budapest Hungary, Exploratorium: Museum of Science, Art and Human Perception in San Francisco, Arts Council Silicon Valley Artist Fellowship, California Council for Humanities California Stories Fund, and the Millay Colony for Artists.

She received a Master's in Fine Arts in Studio Art from University of California, Davis and a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. She currently is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University.

Kevin B. Chen

Kevin B. Chen is a visual artist, curator, and educator. He currently serves as Resident Curator at the Fine Arts Gallery at San Francisco State University, faculty at San Francisco State University and Mills College. and a member of Recology's Artist in Residence Program Advisory Board and Root Division's Curatorial Committee. He recently served as co-chair for the City of Oakland's Public Art Advisory Committee, managed the de Young Museum’s Artist Residency Program and Public Programs, and taught at Stanford University.He has curated projects for Minnesota Street Project, Headlands Center for the Arts, San Francisco Arts Commission Galleries, University of Nevada Reno, San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, San Francisco Art Institute, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, SOMArts Cultural Center, and Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco & Kearny Street Workshop. His curatorial work has been reviewed in publications nationally, including Art in America, afterimage: the journal of media arts and cultural criticism, Sculpture Magazine, Art Papers, New Art Examiner, Art Nexus, Bidoun Magazine, Contemporary Magazine, Bitch Magazine, and the Huffington Post.His work in drawing, collage, and sculpture has been exhibited locally at San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, Southern Exposure, Asian Art Museum, Palo Alto Art Center, Kala Art Institute, Blankspace, Ampersand Gallery, Kearny Street Workshop, and nationally at Angel’s Gate Cultural Center (San Pedro, CA), Harn Museum of Art (Gainesville, FL), Bob Rauschenberg Gallery (Ft. Myers, FL), Bruno David Gallery (St. Louis, MO), New York University Tisch School of the Arts (New York, NY), and The Kitchen (New York, NY).
