R. Lanier Anderson

R. Lanier Anderson is the J. E. Wallace Sterling Professor in the Humanities in the School of Humanities and Sciences, and interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. He joined Stanford's Department of Philosophy in 1996 after stints teaching at Haverford, Bryn Mawr, and Penn. He has participated in efforts to innovate Stanford's undergraduate experience over many years, having served as a core member of the Study of Undergraduate Education at Stanford from 2010 to 2012, and more recently as co-chair for the Future of the Majors strategic design team. Both initiatives reshaped Stanford’s undergraduate curriculum. In addition to his service at Stanford where he now chairs the Department of Philosophy and was formerly Sr. Associate Dean for Humanities and Arts, he also currently serves as Chair of the Board of Officers of the American Philosophical Association. His scholarship concerns the history of philosophy, with strong foci on Kant and Nietzsche, but his most current project is to complete a book about the Essays of Montaigne.
